UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, while other scenes depict the main character navigating a abandoned church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
