The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the popular program coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Audience Reaction

One could easily to get distracted by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan Know the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to discard a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Alternatively, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, one could always use the classics?

“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
