Italian Watchdog Criticizes Ski Pass Cost Increases as Totally Unreasonable
A leading Italian consumer association are sounding the alarm over what they describe as entirely unreasonable price increases for ski passes this cold-weather period, cautioning that alpine sports could become an exclusive privilege for affluent individuals.
Significant Cost Rises Across Italy
From the majestic Alps and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern areas to the slopes of Abruzzo, prices are set to rise by up to 40% compared to prices from three years ago, according to recent analysis.
The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which grants access to all 12 resorts in the exclusive Dolomites, will now cost skiers €86 per day this season. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a daily ski pass is projected to hit €60, after experiencing significant overcrowding during the previous winter.
Annual Ticket Prices and Additional Expenses
At the same time, annual skiing tickets will range from €755 per adult in Roccaraso to as much as €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.
The cost of renting winter sports gear has also increased, along with hotel accommodations and dining expenses throughout alpine destinations.
Consumer Group President Cites Unjustified Increases
Gabriele Melluso, heading the consumer protection group, stated that the price increases—attributed by resorts to increased utility expenses, facility upkeep, and requests for superior gear—were completely unjustified and unacceptable.
"Particularly since Italian inflation rates are under control and energy tariffs, which had raised operational costs for ski resort operators in 2022, have returned to normal," Melluso noted.
The president further stated that prices have climbed to points where budget-conscious visitors are being forced to abandon their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, altogether.
Tourism Decline and Wider Perspective
Melluso observed a significant drop in alpine visitors during the current winter period, with a million fewer domestic visitors visiting ski resorts compared to the prior season due to increasing expenses.
Despite these increases, Italy remains a more affordable destination for skiing enthusiasts in the European region compared to neighboring Switzerland, French destinations, and Austria.
Olympic Context
The growing concern over winter sports expenses comes as the country prepares to host the 2026 Winter Games between the first three weeks of February. Italy's foreign minister, the foreign affairs official, recently stated that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations calling for a "global truce" during the international event.
"With Milan Cortina we must similarly convey a message of peace and dialogue... to halt conflicts during the Olympics," he declared.
